Itinerary

Day	Destination	Description
Days 1-2	Viterbo	Spend free time in Viterbo or walk to nearby Bagnaia to see the Villa Lante, famous for its fine gardens and clever use of water features. Viterbo has a wealth of sights to explore including the 13th century Palazzo Papale, and the church of Santa Maria Nuova, restored after bomb damage in WWII. Otherwise, wander down the Via San Pellegrino to the beautifully preserved medieval quarter. There are open-air hot springs to soak in - or jump into the lake during warmer months.
Day 3	Viterbo to Montefiascone	Cross a plain, passing thermal springs before following a fine section of the Roman Via Cassia to Montefiascone. Located on the highest point of the volcanic ridge surrounding Lake Bolsena, it is thought that Montefiascone was built by the Etruscans on the site of their most sacred shrine.
Days 4-5	Montefiascone to Bolsena	Continue along the ancient Via Cassia until it disappears into the woods. From here, follow farm tracks with views of the lake and the medieval streets of Bolsena. There is a well-preserved 14th century castle with an archaeological museum here. Take the time here to mingle with pilgrims at the church of Santa Cristina perhaps, take a dip in the lake or walk to Acquapendente, an agricultural town well known for its pottery.
Days 6-8	Bolsena to Orvieto	Ramble along the pilgrims' path over the plateau, enjoying expansive views over the region. The final stop, Orvieto, is a perfect place to end this energetic adventure. Sitting dramatically upon volcanic tufo, its location is only surpassed by the magnificence of its cathedral, one of Italy's greatest Gothic buildings.
