In this glitzy city, it's hard not to get caught up in the passion of the local residents. Set against the sparkling green of Guanabara Bay and surrounded by mountainous slopes, Rio is perhaps best know for its contrasting images of favelas and the glamour of Carnaval. To get oriented with this amazing city, or just to look on in awe, head to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain by cable car for some incredible views. | | Days 2-4 | Island Getaway | Find paradise on a beautiful island getaway on Ilha Grande. These tropical beaches and pristine tracts of rainforest are untouched by development and there's excellent snorkelling here, and plenty of time to laze in the sun and enjoy the glittering, warm waters. The island also has a fascinating history - it was once a pirate's lair. | | Days 5-6 | Parati | A World Heritage listed site, Parati is one of the world's best-maintained Portuguese towns. Spend some time exploring the quaint cobblestone streets and enjoy a relaxing dip in the warm waters of the bay. Explore the national parks around Parati, which are filled with walking trails, wildlife and waterfalls. | | Days 7-10 | Iguazu Falls | Why not visit these roaring falls twice - once from Argentina and once from Brazil. These two countries offer two very different perspectives of the waterfalls. One is all panoramic vistas, the other is up close and personal. | | Days 11-12 | Ranch Stay | Visit a local estancia to experience life on a farm and spend time with local Uruguayan hosts, who serve up a delicious home cooked dinner. | | Days 13-14 | Montevideo | Revel in the laid back atmosphere of Montevideo, hit the beaches or explore the many good museums. | | Day 15 | Colonia | Stroll down the cobblestone streets of Colonia and rub shoulders with locals as they go about their day continually sipping from their cups of mate (tea). | | Days 16-17 | Buenos Aires | Cross the Rio de la Plata into Argentina by ferry and journey to the passionate and proud city of Buenos Aires. Explore the many sights and neighbourhoods or find a streetside cafe to stop in at. The perfect end to this South American adventure is a night of fiesty tango dancing at one of BA's many milongas. |
